WordPress powers now almost 25% of U.S websites

Last year the tech blog Techchrunch described the significant growth of the wordpress usage in the U.S for for blogs and websites. By the end of 2011, WordPress was powering ” 14.7% of the top million websites in the world, up from 8.5%. And 22 out of every 100 new active domains in the US are running WordPress.”

Today, WordPress is powering just over 26.9% of blogging services sites and 25% of all websites in the U.S.  Why is that? One reason WordPress is so popular is that it not only allows you to easily create out your own blog, but the CMS can also be used to run anything from a forum to full scale eCommerce store. The time of development is usually significantly less than the required for Drupal or even Joomla.

It is also the platform of choice for new portals and some of the biggest names in US media have WordPress running under the hood.

WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg revealed that each month, 287 million people account for 2.5 billion pageviews on WordPress.com blogs.
